Sustainable Printing
Individually we can't fix ALL of the things that are going wrong in the world, but we can try and fix SOME of them.
And there are some areas where we can have a definite impact, One example of this is the situation of paper, where much of the paper used for printing and packaging is made from chopped down rainforest or monocultures of eucalytus trees grown on areas that used to be natural forests (with all the loss of animal and plant ecosystems that represents)
The solution is to ensure that paper is either recycled or from a sustainable source (FSC being the gold standard in this regard. You can read about the view of Greenpeace on this issue here, and also read an interview with Amy Mulkern from the FSC here)
BFTF has had a number of experiences of publishers who are producing leaflets, magazines or books agreeing that it is important to take care of the environment and use sustainably sourced paper - and then in the next breath admitting that that they have no idea what kind of paper is used in their publications!!
So, to try and provide some help to them in finding printers who can print using sustainably sourced paper, BFTF has started compiling :
a) A list of printers (primarily in the Nottingham area) who can print using FSC or equivalent paper.
b) A list of organisations (primarily in the Nottingham area) who exclusively use FSC (or equivalent) paper for their printed material, really with a view to bigging up their best practice in this area
A couple of things to note, some companies (hopefully not those listed below, will say that their paper conforms to the ISO14001 environmental standard. This standard DOES NOT mandate any particualar level of sustainablility, it merely ensures that companies record what they are doing. Also the PEFC and "Paper by Nature" standards are not nearly as rigorous as those of FSC.
Regarding FSC certified / recycled printer and photocopy paper paper, this is very east to get at all the major office supplies stores (e.g. staples) and also in some supermarkets.
If you know of any other printers or organisations to put on the list, it would be great to hear about them!

Print Revolution (Nottingham)

Print Revolution comment that "At Print Revolution all paper is supplied from Howard Smith Paper, they are FSC certified. What makes our company different from all the other printers that we have a Waterless DI52 Press which is as green as you can get. We don't use nasty chemicals to make plates and no alcohol is used in the print process. We also use vegetable based inks and green energy. We also offer carbon balanced paper for every job we print. This means every job printed the World Land Trust plant trees to offset the carbon used to produce the paper."

Brightsource
www.brightsource.co.uk
This national stationary supplier responded to an email from BFTF by saying "Regarding paper sourcing at Brightsource, for our own marketing/stationery requirements we always insist on either 100% recycled paper or stock that is FSC certified. With regards to our clients requirements we advise on paper policy and will recommend more environmentally-friendly options. However, the client has the final say on what paper stocks they wish to use. The majority of suppliers on our preferred roster either have ISO 14001 certification or are working towards it and most are FSC certified". Good effort - and just goes to hightlight the importance of saying that you want FSC paper to ensure that this is what you get.
